Cathodic protection technology is one kind of electrochemical protection technology, the principle is to apply a certain cathodic polarization current to the surface of the metal structure, will be protective structure of the cathode polarization, so that the electronic migration of metal corrosion can be suppressed, to avoid or weaken the occurrence of corrosion. There are usually two kinds of cathodic protection method: Impressed current cathodic protection and sacrificial anode protection.
Impressed current Cathodic Protection method is to protect the metal and the applied current system is connected to the negative, provided by the external power supply to protect current, to reduce the corrosion rate of the method. The external power supply is introduced into the ground through the auxiliary anode of the ground, and the current is provided to be protected by the soil, so that the rate of the reduction reaction of the metal surface can be greatly exceeded the rate of oxidation reaction, and the corrosion is inhibited. Impressed current Cathodic Protection of the main equipment of power (constant potential instrument), auxiliary anode bed, reference electrode, etc. This method is mainly used to protect the metal structures in large or in high soil resistivity soil, such as: Buried long distance pipeline, large tank group, etc.
Sacrificial anode cathodic protection method is a potential more negative metal or alloy (sacrificial anode) and is protected by metal connection, and in the same electrolyte. The sacrificial anode of battery and protected metal are used as a cathode, anode sacrifice lost to the potential of the metal to be protected, in the battery anode, consumed by corrosion, therefore calls for sacrificial anode. Usually sacrificial anode materials are magnesium and magnesium alloy, zinc alloy, aluminum alloy, etc. This method is simple and easy to operate, without the need of external power supply, little corrosion interference, widely used in small (current is generally less than 1 AMPS) or in low soil resistivity environment (soil resistivity is less than 100 ohm m) metal structure. For example, urban pipe network, small storage tanks, etc.
